Totally agreed that this has to be Palm's thinking.

My concern is that they're shooting themselves in the foot. I really want the Pre to get out there and be strong, and I can't see this move accomplishing anything short of jeopardizing that.

What you say is true and rational but the threat of impending doom has a way of making one's actions irrational.

Palm is just trying to cover its bases while throwing a Hail Mary (excuse the mix of puns). If the Pre or Pixie don't work for Palm they will probably go out of business. Palm will have to pull off a few a major feats. In addition to a new product launch in the middle of a re-depression they will have to take market share from iPhone which has the lifestyle & cross platform software game sewed up.

Palm’s results for the quarter that ended on February 27th were awful, failing to meet Wall St’s modest expectations. Palm sold only 482,000 handsets for the period, down 42% from the same quarter the year before. Revenue dropped from $312 million to $91 million, and Palm lost $95 million.
